These two regions were crucial for the centre-right coalition consisting of Lega, Forza Italia and Brothers of Italy to win, as electoral successes here would have given further legitimacy to Salvini and company’s calls for a new general election, citing the massive dip in support for the governing Five Star Movement (M5S) as evidence that the Italian electorate has lost faith in the government of Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.
