The mission was launched in 2015, in order to “uphold a U.N. arms embargo on Libya”, yet the EU’s naval vessels have brought tens of thousands of illegals to Europe since then. “Sophia” was only halted last March, when the previous Italian government, featuring Matteo Salvini, started rejecting vessels carrying illegal migrants.
